This class has been much more fun than I expected- but my final thoughts are not all in order yet.
I know I would be interested in another class offered. I expect I will cotninue to use delicious, but probably not RSS, unless I start all over again... I seem to have picked feeds that I never want to look at again.
The variation in time needed each week was a surprise over and over again. One week-I think it was RSS- I spent more than eight hours trying to make things work. Other weeks I spent about two hours.
It was fun to read other people's reactions to lessons - I seldom started until Thursday, sometimes did everything on Saturday- so others' insights were really valuable.
I'm off to try an avatar- I need a picture for MLA. Will this work???

the wiki week at last

The sample wikis were FULL of info.
It was interesting that the Wyoming authors wiki had not been updated for months - I checked out several authors - some other wikis had been changed in the last few hours.

A wiki for library employees - if there were more than one - would be useful, and save time and avoid disasters large and small that can occur when people don't know what's going on.
I'm thinking a wiki for my siblings might help us stay on track - in reading emails lately I catch news from one person only in reference back to a message that wasn't sent to me.

One wiki was a made up entirely of blogs...still trying to put that together in my mind.

The Montana book club wiki was fun- what a lot of books I have not read.

I looked at some wikis last week - we lost our connection Saturday afternoon, the time I had reserved for this.
So, I will catch up in the wikis, AND go back to the podcasts - after I get back from three days of meetings: with the county fiscal office, Tracy's law wokshop, and the BV meeting.

One weird thing to note: the photo I had put on my desktop during flickr week disappeared last weekend. ???

Tagging has been fun this week. The little movie, along with the written set of instructions, was easy to follow. (I still don't read lips.)

I set up an account in delicious - an easy one for me. The predicted interest of the social tags led me away from my work list today for more than an hour.

It seems that the tag cloud could be used in the same way people used to use a collection of notecards when gathering info for a project. They can be moved around, re-organized, and listed in different orders of importance.

The downside is that all the interesting sideroads may slow down one's timely arrival to one's original destination. (See paragraph two - I haven't finished this week's work.)

Here are my last thoughts on youtube for now.
These could be really useful for many people if they showed practical things: how to change a tire, fold a fancy napkin, cooking, repairing small instruments; anything where seeing and hearing instructions is better than a little instruction booklet.
Podcastsd are stillon hold...on to week eight.

Looking around in Youtube is fun. I see that there's quite a difference in camera style and expertise. Some are amateurs, some are not. My computer doesn't have sound, so these are silent movies.
My customers show me youtube movies - usually of family members waving hello to them.

Podcasts ( last week is not over) still don't work for me - youtube does. I'll check both of these on a different machine.

This wek I've been reading about podcasting... and reading the techie blog w/ lots of info... and looking at podcast possibilities... and ...my computer has windows 2000... media player works ... nothing else...so I will test some of these things Saturday on a pub computer before the library opens.

Here's another old post. The cut and paste seems to work.

It's time to finish lesson two.The hardest habit for me will be number 7 & 1/2.Play! I do not associate "play" with sitting inside in front of a screen. "Play" means ski trails, meadows full of flowers in the mountains, pre-dawn walks with the dog, long conversations on the porch. I will have to work to re-define "play".So, the other seven habits will all be easier. I expect the easiest will be teaching this to others. The "keeping up with technology" habit brings up a question. How long does a partially completed blog sit before it times out? I've stopped three times so far in this posting to help customers- now four times-.

There's more to RSS than at first meets the eye.
I've been checking for more blogs to add to my list, and every time I find one, need to open up bloglines to ADD. There's been lots of opening and closing. Now I decided to keep bloglines open for the day, to speed up the ADD process.

I found the RSS button on the Reading Rants site - ONLY 24 hours after I first looked for it.

In checking my blog, I saw two posts listed until I signed in. Then all of the posts showed up. Why does this happen?

The other day I tried to add a blog to my list with a little icon CSS, that looked very similar to RSS. (It didn't work. I received an intimidating error message.) I wondered what CSS was, and went out today to look for an answer. CSS is Cascading Style Sheets. This is a set of rules for web page displays - colors and designs and fonts. I'm still sorrry I could not attach that website to my blog.

Another question. I attached an RSS feed for Stephen Abrams. It has posts from 2005 and 2006, but nothing newer. Where is his current stuff?

But, on to thoughts about RSS. I chose 11 feeds. This morning only two of them had any updates. Maybe the weekends are quiet times for blog postings - maybe I chose some relatively inactive blogs. I did spend lots of time looking at websites yesterday. One that I really enjoyed was for my "first" library, the Saint Paul Public.

Back to RSS. This would probably be popular with book club members, who could tease each other with comments about their current book.
Our library board members email each other regularly. They might find a blog as useful.
Library users could use a blog to let staff and other card holders know about all sorts of things. It could serve as a community suggestion box. It could be the place people request new materials, not personally, as in ILL, but in general, for the whole library.

Lesson Three RSS was really easy. The hard part was finding something on the web that I want to look at again that has an RSS tab.
One of my favorite sites is Reading Rants - YA reviews that make me want to read every book. This site had a CSS tab. It looked like it might work like an RSS, but didn't.
